The idea of major surgery is more comforting when minimally invasive techniques are used. OIP doctors sub specialize in this new approach which makes the whole surgical experience so much easier. Anesthesia, blood-loss, pain medicine, complications, and hospital stays can be notably lessened when minimally invasive techniques are used.
Arthroscopic Surgery
Using fiber optics with a tiny lens, a light source, and a video camera, OIP doctors perform arthroscopic surgery on the knee, shoulder, hip, wrist, ankle, and elbow. One difference between arthroscopic and traditional surgery is the incision size. Because only a small incision is made, this procedure reduces blood loss, hospital stays, and recovery time. Arthroscopic surgery is done on an outpatient basis.
Minimally Invasive Hip Replacement Surgery
Thanks to a smaller incision, minimally invasive hip replacement surgery is easier for the patient. This is because there are fewer traumas to underlying soft tissue and muscle resulting in a smaller scar, less pain, and a faster return to normal activities. When compared to traditional hip surgery patients, minimally invasive surgery patients recover 50% faster.
Minimally Invasive Knee Replacement Surgery
Your OIP doctor will know if minimally invasive total knee replacement surgery is the best option for you. Minimally invasive total knee replacement involves the use of a smaller incision between 4 to 6 inches long. As with all minimally invasive procedures there is a smaller scar, less pain, and a faster return to normal activities.

Successful joint replacement surgery depends on the proper alignment of the prosthesis or replacement implant. OIP doctors have access to the latest technology and use a computer program which allows them to provide near perfect alignment of the replacement implant. The benefits are obvious - when the joint is properly aligned it lasts longer and performs better. Plus, this new technology allows means surgery is less invasive.
Partial Hip Replacement
Resurfacing hip arthroplasty, known as partial hip replacement, preserves, rather than replaces bone. OIP doctors prefer to use this procedure when working with younger patients. In this procedure, the femoral head is resurfaced and preserved rather than replaced. Saving bone, especially in young patients, is the biggest advantage resulting from this procedure.
Partial Knee Replacement
OIP doctors offer partial knee replacement to those patients whose arthritis is well confined to one part of the knee. There are many benefits to partial knee replacement which include: higher patient satisfaction, preservation of more normal knee motion, less blood loss during surgery, and a faster recovery time.
Traditionally, knee implants were created based upon a combined average of the size and shape of both male and female anatomies. As a result, these implants did not appropriately fit women. High flex knees otherwise known as female specific knees are designed specifically for women. Today, OIP doctors offer only female specific knees to their female patients allowing for optimum comfort and mobility.
Your OIP doctor may recommend a rotating platform knee replacement if it is the best choice for you. Rotating platform knee replacements are more mobile than a regular fixed-bearing replacement allowing for greater knee rotation. This increased mobility factor also reduces the amount of wear and tear on the implant, providing greater durability.
OtisKnee® is a new technique that for the very first time allows surgeons to offer Custom Fit Knee® replacement. This means that you will receive a knee replacement tailor-made for your own normal (non-diseased) anatomy, and no one else’s. Your OIP doctor will know if a Custom Fit (Otis) knee is an option for you.
Traditionally, the hip replacement implant was created out of a metal ball which would rotate on a plastic cup. Because the plastic cup is known to wear down in 10 to 15 years, new alternatives have been created.
Ceramic on Ceramic: One alternative to the metal on plastic replacement is the ceramic on ceramic replacement. Here, instead of metal and plastic, only ceramic is used allowing for great durability. There are disadvantages to this option as well. You and your OIP doctor will determine whether a ceramic on ceramic implant is the best choice for you.
Metal on Metal: Another alternative to the older plastic on metal implant is the metal on metal implant. This replacement has the advantage of being the most durable choice of all. This implant is also customizable, minimizing the risk of postoperative hip dislocation. You and your OIP doctor will determine if a metal on metal implant is your best choice.
We encourage patients and their families to attend....even if they are only thinking about having the surgery. We give lots of good information that makes decision making easier.
